Farming Basics

The fundamental farming cycle in Sun Haven consists of four main activities:

1. Land Preparation

Before planting, you must prepare the soil:

  • Clear debris - Remove rocks, logs, and weeds with appropriate tools
  • Till soil - Use the hoe to create farmable plots
  • Quality soil - Some plots yield better results; look for darker soil patches
  • Spacing - Leave room between plots for walking and irrigation pipes

2. Planting Seeds

Seeds are purchased from the General Store or obtained through quests:

  • Stand facing an empty tilled plot
  • Select seeds from inventory
  • Click/use action button to plant
  • One seed = one plant (no multi-seed planting)
  • Seeds can only be planted in appropriate seasons
Critical: Each crop has specific season requirements. Planting out-of-season seeds wastes them - they won't grow. Check the Seasonal Crops Calendar before buying.

3. Watering

Watering is essential until automation unlocks:

  • Manual watering - Use watering can, refill at water sources
  • Daily requirement - All crops must be watered each day
  • Time cost - Takes 10-30 minutes depending on farm size
  • Energy cost - Each watering uses energy points
  • Irrigation pipes - Unlock via Farming skill tree

4. Harvesting

When crops mature, harvest for profit:

  • Crops flash/sparkle when ready to harvest
  • Click/use action button on mature crop
  • Single harvest crops disappear after picking
  • Recurring crops (beans, tomatoes) continue producing
  • Sell at General Store or use for cooking/gifting

Irrigation Systems

Irrigation is the first step toward farm automation. It eliminates daily manual watering, saving significant time.

Irrigation Pipe Types

Type Unlock Requirement Coverage Material Cost
Basic Pipe Farming Level 5 Adjacent plots (4 tiles) 5 Copper + 10 Stone
Extended Pipe Farming Level 10 6 tiles in line 10 Copper + 5 Iron + 20 Stone
Sprinkler Head Farming Level 12 8 tiles radius 5 Iron + 3 Gold + 30 Stone
Advanced Sprinkler Farming Level 15 16 tiles radius 10 Gold + 5 Gems + 50 Stone

Water Source Requirements

All irrigation systems require connection to water:

  • Place pipes starting from water source (river, well, pond)
  • Pipes must connect continuously - no gaps allowed
  • Maximum pipe length varies by system type
  • Well can be built on farm for closer water access
Layout Strategy: Build your farm in a grid pattern with pipe "lanes" running through. This minimizes pipe cost while ensuring complete coverage. A 3x3 crop grid centered on one sprinkler head is most efficient.

Irrigation Layout Example

Optimal Sprinkler Layout (16-tile coverage):
[WATER]---PIPE---PIPE---[SPRINKLER]
                        | | | |
                        C C C C
                        C C C C
                        C C C C
                        C C C C
(C = Crop, 16 tiles covered by one Advanced Sprinkler)

Farm Automation

Full automation goes beyond irrigation. It includes auto-harvest, auto-planting, and storage collection.

Automation Tools

Tool Unlock Level Function Setup Cost
Auto-Harvester Farming Level 8 Collects mature crops automatically 20 Iron + 5 Gold
Seed Planter Farming Level 11 Auto-plants specified seeds in plots 15 Iron + 10 Copper + Seeds
Collection Bin Farming Level 6 Stores harvested crops near farm 20 Wood + 10 Stone
Auto-Seller Farming Level 14 Sells crops directly without visiting store 10 Gold + 5 Gems + 50 Iron

Full Automation Setup

Complete automation requires multiple systems working together:

  1. Install irrigation pipes/sprinklers covering all plots
  2. Place Auto-Harvesters at strategic collection points
  3. Set up Collection Bins near harvesters
  4. Configure Seed Planters with desired crop seeds
  5. Connect Auto-Seller for direct income conversion
  6. Check daily for maintenance and seed refill
Note: Automation tools still require occasional maintenance. Seed Planters need seed refills, and Auto-Harvesters need output clearing. Check your systems every few days.

Seasonal Farming Strategy

Each season offers different crops with varying profitability. Planning your seasonal rotation maximizes income.

Spring Season (28 Days)

Turnips

4 days | 35g | Fast income starter

Potatoes

6 days | 60g | Reliable mid-season

Cauliflower

12 days | 150g | High value finale

Green Beans

8 days initial | 40g/harvest | Recurring

Strawberries

8 days | 80g/harvest | Best recurring profit

Summer Season (28 Days)

Tomatoes

11 days | 70g/harvest | Recurring

Corn

14 days | 100g/harvest | High recurring

Melons

12 days | 200g | Single high value

Blueberries

13 days | 120g/harvest | Excellent recurring

Hot Peppers

5 days | 50g/harvest | Fast recurring

Fall Season (28 Days)

Pumpkins

13 days | 250g | Highest single value

Cranberries

7 days | 95g/harvest | Good recurring

Eggplants

5 days | 45g/harvest | Fast recurring

Yams

10 days | 110g | Solid mid-tier

Artichokes

8 days | 160g | High value

Winter Season (28 Days)

Winter farming is limited but possible:

  • Few outdoor crops - Only winter-specific varieties grow
  • Indoor farming - Build greenhouse for year-round crops
  • Focus shift - Mining, fishing, and relationship building
  • Preparation - Plan and upgrade for next Spring
Season Transition Tip: On season change day (28th), all non-winter crops die. Plan your final plantings so crops mature BEFORE season ends. Calculate: Plant Date + Growth Days < 28.

Profit Optimization Strategies

Maximum Profit Per Season Formula

Strategy Method Est. Gold Per Season
Quick Rotation Fast crops (4-6 day) repeated multiple times 2,000-3,000g
High Value Focus Single expensive crops (Pumpkins, Melons) 3,000-5,000g
Recurring Crops Plants that produce multiple harvests 4,000-7,000g
Mixed Strategy Blend of fast starters + recurring + high value 5,000-10,000g
Automated Mega-Farm Full automation with 100+ plots 15,000-30,000g+

Best Recurring Crops by Season

Recurring crops offer the best long-term ROI:

  • Spring: Strawberries (80g every 4 days after maturity)
  • Summer: Blueberries (120g every 5 days after maturity)
  • Fall: Cranberries (95g every 5 days after maturity)
ROI Calculation Example: Strawberry seeds cost 100g. First harvest at 8 days, then every 4 days. In 28-day season: 1 initial + 5 recurring = 6 harvests × 80g = 480g. Net profit per plant: 380g. With 50 plants: 19,000g potential.
